Abetone has been widely recognized as the
 |
Mountain |
most popular ski resort on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine. The Abetone Pass, at an altitude of 1388mt, is so popular because of the ring of high mountains that surrounds it. An impressive forest of Coniferae typifies the territory and the interest which arouses is mainly related to nature and sports. Nevertheless the buildings which are located in the area which are related to the history of the territory and of the Via Modenese deserve to be mentioned: the Customs, the mail office, the church dedicated to Saint Leopold and the Pyramids. During spring and summer, since it offers the possibility to go for various and several excursions, Abetone is the privileged area for those who want to live in close contact with the environment and discover its Apennine flora and fauna. Starting from Boscolungo, with about two hours and a half of walking along a sloping ( but picturesque) path, it is possible to reach the charming Libro Aperto Mountain (Open Book Mountain) (1937 above sea level), from where one may enjoy an enchanting and captivating scenery and from where it is also possible, after two more hours, to reach the Cimone mountain, that, being 2165 mt high, is the highest mountain in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine.
Nature reserve of Campolino
It was established in 1972 to protect the spruce (Picea Abinens), a very rare type of tree that during the ice age was common on the Apennines. The nature reserve of Campolino can be visited only by people previously authorized by the Forester of Abetone, who in the summertime organizes wonderful guided excursions.
Forest botanical garden of Abetone
It is located in the high valley of Sestaione, at an altitude that goes between 1270 and 1300 mt. This enchanting and charming “Alpine garden” houses plants of great scientific interest, many of which are now dying species.
