     Piteglio

The territory of the municipal district of Piteglio
Ponte di Castruccio
extends in a mountain area which is still characterized by well known mediaeval castles which are linked one to the other by an old road system that is still well preserved.
So the town layout is unaltered and it makes this charming area even more picturesque. To reach this village you need to walk along roads immersed in woods of chestnut trees, beech trees and other mixed trees which cover the slopes of the mountain. Nearby Piteglio there is a spectacular tree-lined avenue from where it is possible to admire the village in its entirety.

The visitors may reach the fascinating mediaeval village walking along this avenue.
Once Piteglio, because of its strategic location, was a very important crossroads of the trans-Apennine road that linked Pistoia with Garfagnana. Its picturesque fortified castle was valuable in the 11th and 12th century, and it is still possible to admire the old houses facing the narrow streets which are walked through by the visitors. In the center of the village there is the church of Our Lady of the Annunciation. The legend tells that in this church people used to celebrate an old rite connected with the relic  of the holy milk of the Virgin, which was taken by a crusader from the Holy Land and which is still kept on the altar of the church.
Also there are several castles to visit in the neighbourhood of Piteglio, for example  Popiglio, Prunetta, Crespole, Lanciole and  Calamecca.
